The "Josani" Church or the church in the valley was built in 1643. Inside the church the visitor can admire a unique collection of glass painted icons with folkloric scenes and a valuable wood painted icon from 14th century. Also the helmet and the steel wire shirt that belonged to a famous local outlaw named Pintea the Brave is displayed in the church.

The "Susani" church or the upper church was erected in 1595. The walls are covered with paintings representing biblical scenes but the characters are dressed in local folk costumes. The church has a unique collection of wooden icons painted on both sides, which are often sent to be displayed at exhibitions all over the world.

   

Barsana


The village Barsana occures in the documents for the first time, in the second half of the 14th century. The church was raised in 1720, on the place of an old one, asumingly from the 14th century. It is a remarcable piece of work, realized in wood and painted in 1806 by Toader Hodor

   

Poienile Izei

The town of Poienile Izei, appears in documents in 1430 under the name of Poienile Glodului. This village has the most beautiful wooden church in the region of Maramures. Its name is Santa Paraschiva . This church has been elevated in year 1604. The inner paintings have been realized between the years 1793-1794 by the painter Gheorghe and are very well conserved.

   

Ieud

Two wooden churches have been declared historical and architectural monuments. The first one is 'The birth of Virgin Mary ' Church on the hill, built in 1364and is the oldest church in Maramures. It is built from pine and fir wood with small windows, double roof and a single, impressive steeple. The paintings are original, dating from the 15th -16th century and their condition is relatively good. The church also has a collection of glass painted icons. Inside, the stairs to the tower are carved in one piece of wood.'Zbornicul' or ' The Book of Laws' was discovered in the attic , unique in the country and the oldest manuscript in the Romanian language printed in 1543 in Brasov. The second church was erected in 1699 and is called the Church in the Valley. Built in "Maramures gothic" style, the church is also called the "Wooden Cathedral".
